Ellis Worthing set up a blog about natural pain relief solutions earlier this year using the blog-focused website builder, WordPress.com. We interviewed Ellis about their experience managing the side hustle, the importance of producing content, and the challenges they faced when building a website from scratch.
“There are lots of nitty gritty details that all add up to build a professional website and it is a step-by-step process – it doesn’t have to all be done in a day.”
Setting Up a Blog
“My website is called calmpainrelief.com – it’s a pain relief blog that focuses on natural remedies. I got started after suffering from back pain for a long while. I went to a physio numerous times and I realized a lot of these treatments I can do myself at home. I figured that I could share that knowledge so that people could try to help themselves before seeking professional help.
The blog’s content aims to provide comprehensive advice, tips, and guidance for those seeking pain relief, prior to looking for professional help. We don’t underestimate the value of professional health services, but we believe that one can gain a lot from basic healing methods and techniques prior to making contact with outside help. As we grow, the intention is to add detailed graphics and videos that users can follow step-by-step as and when they deem fit.
My website was a new idea, kind of a side hustle for me, with the intention of providing good quality content for readers to use. As it expands, I now conduct my own research as I write new content.”
Managing a Side Hustle
“To be honest, this is something I do on the side. It’s a matter of creating a system where I allocate a few hours each week to create content, update the site, and check everything is running okay. For me, this is not necessarily a fixed time each week but it is more about making sure I have time to do the right research and create the content.”
A Writer’s Journey
“I usually begin with an idea I would like to write about. I run some research on relevant keywords and also run some Google searches to see what information is out there on the subject.
I don’t just want to repeat what is already written but I look to make more thorough and engaging content.
Once this is done, and I have the information I need, the writing begins. ChatGPT and other AI tools are useful at this point to provide a good outline and give suggestions on what to write. Once the writing is complete, it is all about adding it to the website.
I use tools, such as Google Analytics and Google Search Console, to check my website traffic and adapt the posts so that they’re gaining higher rankings in Google. In terms of success, initially, it’s to create a blog that people are interested in engaging with.”

Building With WordPress.com
“I chose to create a website in order to share knowledge about natural healing methods and pain relief. WordPress.com was highly recommended when I set out on my initial research so I just went for it.
I went for a basic plan. As I was just starting, I didn’t see the value in anything too sophisticated. I just wanted to get up and running.
Once I got the hang of it, I really enjoyed the block page builder templates. They are really easy to use and mess around with. It makes page building that much simpler.
I find Yoast SEO, a plugin that helps you optimize your website to raise your website ranking in Google search, very useful. I believe that with some website host providers, the plugin comes as standard. The plugin offers suggestions on how to improve your page SEO and reports your page’s strengths and weaknesses.”
Trial and Error
“I guess the main challenge was getting started. I didn’t know the first thing about building websites and how to create content. It was definitely a trial-and-error process during which mistakes were made. I watched many YouTube tutorials and other articles in order to troubleshoot some of the issues I encountered.
I definitely sought help but I did try to avoid paying money where it was not necessary. For instance, I ran many Google searches to find answers to issues I was struggling with. I also watched many website-building tutorials.
I would love some more guidance from the platform itself on how to use their site. As a basic plan user, there’s not much internal help out there. It’s a matter of searching the internet every time you are troubleshooting. I do believe that the premium plans do offer a better level of customer service.”

Advice for Bloggers
“My advice would be to give myself time and not feel pressured about it [building a website]. There are lots of nitty gritty details that all add up to build a professional website and it is a step-by-step process – it doesn’t have to all be done in a day.
There is a lot of help out there. I knew next to nothing about website building and managed to self-teach myself by browsing everything online. There will be many occasions where you feel overwhelmed but be persistent as there is a lot of help and guidance available.
I would say that anyone looking to start a blog or join the wellness industry should try to find something specific rather than taking it all on. At the same time, they shouldn’t be too specific – otherwise, there won’t be too much to write about.”
Future Plans
“The future is to build and gain more recognition and perhaps, sometime in the future, offer a free product or reward for my readers.”
